"Mental illnesses are often still stigmatized in our current society as a hurdle that cannot be overcome, however millions of individuals live with mental illnesses. These individuals are able to lead fulfilling lives, find happiness, inspire others and make positive impacts on society. Think Outside the Stigma

Yusra changed the discourse by emphasizing through descriptions of Selena Gomez's actions that there is no shame in being ill or being diagnosed with a mental illness. Yusra's narrative about Selena is an important reminder that destigmatization of mental illness starts first and foremost from within.

How Yusra Studies

"My study style incorporates different methods that help me learn best, specifically through visual, auditory, and reinforcement. I have always been a visual and auditory learner, so typically I will begin my studying with watching lectures on the topic. These lectures can either be in the standard whiteboard format, or one that incorporates visual animations. After completing lectures, I like to test my knowledge by doing practice problems. The practice problems help me to gain a practical application of the knowledge that I've acquired. As I complete the practice problems, I like to make flash cards on topics and concept I'm still struggling with. I continue to review the flash cards I made to reinforce my weak areas prior to an exam."

Select Quotes:

On Selena Gomez

"Since her diagnosis with Lupus disease in 2015, where she required a transplant... [Selena] also battled frequent anxiety, panic attacks, and depression. The singer faced the internal pressure to continue growing her music career, and feared disappointing her fans, but ultimately opted to prioritize her physical and mental health."

On Navigating Challenges

"She placed herself in in-patient treatment for 90 days in order to focus on her health, and even cancelled her tour in the summer of 2016. Upon leaving treatment, she spoke passionately about her mental health challenges and advocated for the benefits of therapy amongst different platforms... She also candidly discussed her mental health during her award speech..."

"The singer was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2020. Selena received the diagnosis in stride and continued to speak on her illness and spread awareness. She held interviews...where she stated that her diagnosis was 'freeing'...that 'I really just want people to be understood and seen and heard. It's okay to not be okay.' "

On Achievements and/or Social Impact

"The singer has continued to pursue her dreams in spite of her diagnosis; In 2020 she launched her beauty brand called Rare Beauty. The brand also advocated for mental wellness with its Impact Fund, that aims to reduce stigma associated with mental health and provide mental health resources for underserved communities. The fund hosted a virtual Mental health event in 2022, featuring mental health advocates. Lastly, the singer has an upcoming documentary... titled 'Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me' where she explains her health journey over the course of 6 years. "

On Inspiring

"[Selena] hopes that her vulnerability will inspire others that have struggled, and to remind them that they are not alone. To my friend, I would say that mental health challenges can be overwhelming, and the added stigma from society can make the experience feel very isolating. However, she is not alone and there are resources and support systems that can help her to overcome her challenges. Having to face these challenges will only serve to make her a stronger person. She can still pursue her dreams in life, and inspire others to also overcome their mental illness. While stigma does exist, there are many people that have not let stigma limit their potential, and the more awareness is brought to the issue, the more we can decrease stigma in the future."
