How Jeremy Studies
"How I study for every class is different. For my STEM classes, repetition is what helps me the most. For more applied knowledge and conceptual classes, I like to make quizlets to obtain the information. I also like to use mnemonic devices to remember information as well. Rewriting my notes also helps me further cement the information in my mind, especially when the professor is
lecturing very fast."
Select Quotes:
On Dak Prescott
"Being the quarterback for one of America's most popular sports teams puts a lot of pressure on [Dak]. He said after his brother passed away that he was experiencing feelings he had never felt before and did not know how to handle them."
On Navigating Challenges
"Dak started to become more valuable to the media and started to talk about this experience and how he felt. He received backlash from sports commentator Skip Bayless. He said that being depressed is not an excuse for bad play and that he is being soft. This comment sparked a movement throughout the sports world to rally behind Dak to support him in this time of need."
On Achievements and/or Social Impact
"Dak speaks up on his mental health on one of the largest platforms in sports. Many other athletes came to Dak's defense and praised him for speaking up about his mental health and being a role model for people that could be in similar situations."
On Inspiring
"As a black man, seeing what Dak is doing is inspiring
because growing up, we are groomed to think that shows weakness or we are soft. So we often ball up our
emotions inside of us and make things worse for ourselves instead of expressing ourselves. We often let our
emotions consume us after hiding them for so long. If you need help or need to express yourself, do it because
it is not a weakness. It shows that you are strong by wanting to express yourself. Expressing yourself is the only
way to move forward in life. Dak was not able to get better till he expressed himself and got the help he needed."
About Jeremy
"I am Jeremy Russ, a junior Nutritional Science (Pre-Dental) major and a Biology and Chemistry double minor at Howard University from Durham, NC. I like to spend time with my family and travel when I have the opportunity. I also enjoy going to sporting events and seeing my favorite artists perform live. I am a huge advocate for mental health, especially in the African American community, because we are often overlooked and our trauma has become normalized over the years. Just remember as you navigate through life that hard times make strong individuals, and it is ok to ask for help during these times."
