An Update from the MSM Bright Suns Scholarship

Dear Prospective Applicants,

Please pardon the delay to the start of this year's MSM Bright Suns Scholarship competition. We are a small organization with lofty goals to promote the importance of lifelong learning in positive social change, and to end to stigma through study.

At this time, we are making some necessary updates and adjustments and working hard to ensure the MSM Bright Suns Scholarship comes back as dedicated as ever.

The Maryam Sharron Muhammad (MSM) Bright Suns Scholarship

Named in honor of Bunche Fellow honoree, historian and author, Maryam Sharron Muhammad, the Maryam Sharron Muhammad (MSM) Bright Suns Scholarship invites students of every type to submit an application. If you value lifelong-learning, want to put a dent in stigma, and wish to apply your studies towards positively impacting the world around you, we'd love to hear from you. For Students of Every Type

You do not have to be enrolled in a college, university, academic or trade program to apply for this scholarship. The scholarship competition is open to anyone who values life-long learning - students in the classroom and students of life are equally welcome to apply!

Scholarship Award Amount

The winner(s) of the MSM Bright Suns Scholarship contest will receive a $500 cash prize, or an Honorable mention award of $125.

Ending Stigma Through Study
The 'Value of Study' To Positive Social Change


In the spirit of lifelong learning and giving back, the Maryam Sharron Muhammad (MSM) Bright Suns Scholarship was created to honor Maryam Sharron, her life and her love of learning, while also raising awareness around mental health stigma. We believe in emphasizing the value of study, which Maryam Sharron was so passionate about, in positive social change and in impacting stigma.

The MSM Bright Suns Scholarship asks applicants to brainstorm around various topics to spur ideas of social change with emphasis on affecting mental health stigma. If you decide to apply, you will be asked to answer a short series of essay questions that encourage you to think in a socially conscious manner and demonstrate imagination, creativity, excellence and innovation in thought.

Winners best demonstrate an ability to Think Outside the Stigma and apply thought, careful attention and contemplativeness to express the Value of Study to positive social change.

If you win, you will be recognized on our site as an MSM Bright Suns Scholar or as an Honorable Mention, receive a $500 prize or $125 prize (either to be used as you wish) and awarded only with the hope that you continue to study ways to improve the world.

▪ Applications must be completed in English.

▪ You do not have to be enrolled in a college, university, academic or trade program to apply for this scholarship.

▪ The 2023 application period reopens soon - please check back for updates.

▪ Applicant must complete the application in its entirety.

▪ Applications must be submitted via the online form on this website. Duplicate submissions will be disregarded.

▪ All submissions in full or in part may be featured on our website and our social sites and/or publications, only in relation to the MSM Bright Suns Scholarship, and credited to the applicant.

▪ Winner(s) of the scholarship competition must submit one (1) photo of yourself. You agree that it will be posted to our website and our social platforms and publications and only in relation to the MSM Bright Suns Scholarship.

▪ Winner(s) of the scholarship competition agree to accept award payment in the name and email address used on your application.

▪ Submission of offensive, violent, racist, illegal, graphic or pornographic content and/or photos will result in automatic disqualification from the scholarship competition and award winnings.

Awards & Selection Process

▪ Applicants will primarily be judged on the strength and clarity of their ideas, and their ability to persuasively convey them. It’s also a plus when applicants are able to take a creative and imaginative approach when considering solutions to real world issues.

▪ There is no fee to apply.

▪ Winner(s) are chosen at the discretion of the selection committee.

▪ Award payments will be dispersed to the individual applicant only.

▪ Award amount is listed and paid in United States Dollars (USD).

▪ Award payment is issued electronically via PayPal or Xoom to the email address and name listed on your application.

▪ WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED VIA E-MAIL & AND POSTED TO THIS SITE STARTING

Scholarship Entry

▪ Entrants to the annual MSM Bright Suns Scholarship competition may be asked to answer one or a series of questions. Questions are designed to encourage the applicant to demonstrate the Value of Study and to Think Outside the Stigma.

▪ The style of questioning is flexible and may require an essay, video, or other type of online submission.

▪ We also ask applicants to tell us how they study, and to provide basic demographic information, both added in order to get to know you a little better.

▪ A preview of the main questions on the application is posted early, usually a few days to a few weeks before the actual application opening date. We do this to give applicants extra time to think about their answers.
